The Sewing Dilemma

As Family and Consumer Science teachers we are always looking for interesting ways to deliver our content and in many cases, debunk archaic gender stereotypes.  We want to engage and inspire our students to learn and apply useful skills to better their own lives and the lives of their family members. This brings me to the ever present standards encasing sewing skills.  Do your students also picture an elderly women quilting by lamplight in a well loved rocker when you introduce a sewing unit? While I hope that I can engender my students to appreciate skills and traditions of their ancestors, I also hope I can persuade them to see the value of sewing skills applied to clothing repairs and alterations.  I feel that this video meets those objectives. Man Sewing With Rob Appell punctures old-school gender institutions and teaches useful sewing skills in a, yes I’ll say it, fun and hip way. Check out his tutorials when you are planning your next sewing unit. Here is Rob's tutorial on hemming jeans.
